The situation of Palestinian refugees is considered to be the most protracted, complex and refugee issue worldwide (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East [UNRWA], 2023; Erni, 2013). The right to return or to receive compensation is enshrined in international law. (United Nations General Assembly, 1948; Takkenberg, 1998).

The “Voices from Palestinian Exiles (VOPE)” project aims to amplify the voices of those affected and to promote a constructive vision grounded in sound legal and social science foundations.

The project brings together universities, students, graduates, young academics, and researchers from five Arab countries and Germany, facilitating intensive scientific and personal exchanges. For all participants, it represents a process of self-reflection, engagement with their own and others’ perspectives and values, and a dialogue between theory and practice.

This initiative addresses one of the most challenging topics in German-Arab discourse, especially amid the recent escalation of the Middle East conflict, which threatens to undo decades of rapprochement. Overcoming the current silence is therefore essential.
